Flood insurance claims are time-consuming and difficult to document.

Texas flood damage insurance claims are subject to stringent rules and a detailed filing process.

Flash floods can happen suddenly, transforming the landscape from years of drought to flooded drainage ditches, rivers, creeks, streams and lakes.   Water from overflows quickly becomes contaminated with sewage.

Flood insurance claims are messy, and can turn your life upside down in a matter of days.

Experts using a complex sanitation process administer the cleanup to a flooded business or home. Incorrectly administered cleanup using too much heat or drying items too quickly can cause additional damage to property.

Private insurance companies have traditionally not covered flood damage. To address this issue, The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a program created by the Congress of the United States in 1968 through the National Flood Insurance Act of 1968 (NFIP). Standard property insurance does not cover flood damage. A business or homeowner will need to purchase a separate policy from a private insurance company to be covered in the event of a flood. The NFIP ensures that the federal government reimburses the private insurance carrier for claim payments.

We recommend a few simple steps to be prepared in the event of a flood.

It is our goal to educate our clients, and include them in every step of the process. We ensure every client understands their rights during an insurance claim.

Backup Copies

Keep copies of all policy documentation and internal practices in cloud storage or an easily-accessible company file storage. Ensure that all members of the team are aware of procedures and provided access credentials.

Recovery Plan

Every year, have a disaster recovery team meeting where policy details and company procedures are discussed. Have each team member read the policies thoroughly and be aware of the details of your coverage.

Caution

Be aware of any timely filing policies, and establish a procedure for immediate follow-up in the event of any flood damage. Hire a licensed public adjuster with experience in flood damage in the event of any water loss.

The Claim Filing Process

The process for filing a flood claim is complex. Typically, an index of loss must be completed within 60 days from the date of the event.

A claim must be analyzed and documented to support the definition of a flood provided by FEMA and the NFIP. This means the analysis of loss must be completed quickly, while you are preoccupied with assuming your normal business and life.

A public adjuster will inspect the property, examine your policy, document the loss and consult with the insurer on behalf of you to maximize your payout.

The Definition of a Flood

FEMA.gov

  • A general and temporary condition of partial or complete inundation of 2 or more acres of normally dry land area or of 2 or more properties (at least 1 of which is the policyholder’s property) from:
    • Overflow of inland or tidal waters; or
    • Unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source; or
    • Mudflow;or
  • Collapse or subsidence of land along the shore of a lake or similar body of water as a result of erosion or undermining caused by waves or currents of water exceeding anticipated cyclical levels that result in a flood as defined above.
